A 20-MINUTE WALKTHROUGH. DISCRETION ASSURED.

WHY VERSO

Nobody wants to catalogue. They want to be catalogued.

Documentation is a chore that blocks a payoff, which is why every tool that makes you type has left the door open. Here is what you are probably using, where it gives out, and what takes its place.

I
I — WHAT YOU'RE LEAVING

Four systems, and the moment each one fails.

i.

The spreadsheet

Free, private, endlessly flexible, and already open on your desktop. The real incumbent, and nobody admits it.

WHERE IT FAILS

It is never updated. There is no photograph, no receipt, no certificate attached to a row — so at the moment of a claim it proves that you kept a list, not that you owned the work.

WHAT VERSO DOES INSTEAD

Imports it in one step, with column mapping and bulk image matching, and then asks less of you than maintaining it did.

ii.

Desktop-era gallery software

The established platforms, built over a decade for galleries, artists, and institutions, with a collector tier added later.

WHERE IT FAILS

Built for selling, not for owning — so you navigate around a sales pipeline and a consignment module to reach your own records. Typing is the only way in, mobile is an afterthought, and nothing works without a connection.

WHAT VERSO DOES INSTEAD

Catalogues from a photograph in about thirty seconds, on the phone already in your hand, in a storage unit with no signal — and never shows you a field about selling.

iii.

The new collector web app

Recent entrants that share the thesis — built for private collectors rather than for the trade.

WHERE IT FAILS

A web form and a gallery view. No capture beyond typing, no native app, and the registrar's record is missing: no contacts, no loans, no condition reports over time, no policy records, no movement history.

WHAT VERSO DOES INSTEAD

Captures instead of asking you to type, and keeps the record an appraiser or a registrar would recognise.

iv.

The general collectibles app

AI-first cataloguing apps that will photograph anything you own — watches, coins, wine, firearms, and art among them.

WHERE IT FAILS

Breadth is what makes them generic. Consumer-grade valuations stated with more confidence than they have earned, and no provenance chain, edition model, or exhibition history — because those things only matter for art.

WHAT VERSO DOES INSTEAD

Does one category properly. Provenance, editions, condition, exhibitions and loans, and a valuation that is always labelled an estimate.

II
II — MOVING IN

Bring the spreadsheet.

CSV or Excel, with a column-mapping step and a dry-run preview before a single row is written. Images match to rows by filename or by sight. Contacts and locations are pulled out of what you already typed, duplicates are caught on the way in, and if any of it looks wrong the whole import rolls back. For larger collections we do it for you.

And leaving is the same motion in reverse. Full export — CSV plus every original image and document — any time, in formats that work elsewhere. We would rather be the record you keep than the record you cannot get out of.

VIDEO — TO BE FILMED

An import, start to finish: a real collector's spreadsheet dropped in, columns mapped to fields, the dry run reporting what it could not read, then the works appearing in the collection view with their images matched. Show the error rows rather than cutting around them — the claim is that migration is honest, not that it is magic.

III
III — IN ORDER

Capture gets you in. The rest is why you stay.

i.

Capture speed

Gets people in. Nobody wants to catalogue; they want to be catalogued.

ii.

Record depth

Keeps serious collectors. A demo is obvious to anyone with two hundred works.

iii.

Claim-readiness

The recurring reason to return, in the long stretch when nothing is happening.

iv.

The professional relationships

Advisors, registrars, insurers and appraisers. The part that cannot be copied from a landing page.

IV
IV — DELIBERATELY OUT OF SCOPE

What Verso will not build.

Each of these appears on somebody's feature list. Each one pulls toward a buyer we are not serving, and a product a private collector would not want to be inside of. Publishing the list is how you can hold us to it.

Sales pipeline and gallery CRM

A dealer's business, not an owner's

Invoicing and payment processing

The same business, one step further in

Marketplace, e-commerce, consignment

Verso is a record, not a venue

Authentication or attribution

Ruinous liability, and no model is capable of it

Wine, cars, watches, and the rest

The tempting one. Breadth is exactly what makes the alternatives generic

Discovery feeds, social features, recommendations

Wrong product, and the wrong values for this audience

Advice on what to buy next

Several competitors are drifting there. We audit your records, not your taste

Ads, data sale, monetising your collection

Not a policy. The product
